Man accused of taking his own, another's cash
A Butler man is accused of breaking into his landlord’s office Tuesday and stealing $240 from a drop box.
The stolen money was apparently a portion of the suspect’s monthly rent payment that he had left in the box the previous night, city police said,
Police arrested Dustin J. Blinn, 33, on charges of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property. He is in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.
John Marten, who owns the apartment building at 325 W. Jefferson St., notified police about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday after discovering the break-in.
The crime occurred when someone with a pry bar forced in the door of Marten’s office. The lid to the drop box attached on the inside of the door also was broken, according to court documents.
Video footage from the building surveillance’s system about 2:50 a.m. showed the apparent suspect, who Marten believed was Blinn, documents said.
The security images, in part, show the burglar enter the basement and then leave while clutching something under his arm. Police believe the item was a small tin that contained about $75 worth of quarters, which was taken from the office.
Marten told police of a text message that Blinn sent him Monday night. Blinn in the text told the victim that he had placed $240, half his rent money, in the drop box.
Along with the quarters, police said, Marten found that money missing.
Not long after the alleged crime, police spotted Blinn walking on Chestnut Street near the apartment building. He was holding a plastic bag.
When an officer called to him, Blinn kept walking and discarded the bag next to a mail truck. The officer recovered the bag and found it had what police believe was the tin taken from Marten’s office.
