Robert P. Montgomery
Robert P. Montgomery, 77, of Cabot passed away Monday at the Good Samaritan Hospice.
Born June 14, 1939, in Marwood, Pa., he was the son of the late R. Clarke Montgomery and J. Delsie (Wetzel) Montgomery.
A 1957 graduate of Winfield High School, Bob served three years in the U.S. Marines and spent six months sailing the Mediterranean on an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Essex.
Upon his return, he worked as a precision machinist at Oberg Manufacturing and elsewhere. In 1971, he was one of seven founding investors in Penn United Technologies, which now employs 500 people and is still employee-owned.
Bob earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1975 from Grove City College, bought some property in Butler and became the owner and operator of the Grand Rental Station, initially known as Taylor Rental. That business sprouted additional ventures, and, when those ceased to challenge him, Bob got his pilot's license and began flying ultralight aircraft.
In retirement, Bob enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, exercising at the VA gym, and attending his regular morning kaffeeklatsch at McDonalds. He also loved traveling. In 2012, he and a buddy flew to Australia and spent three months cruising around the world with stops in Hong Kong, Thailand, India and Barcelona. It was the trip of a lifetime.
Surviving are his wife, Myrna A. (Jones) Montgomery, who he married June 26, 1959; his daughter, Lori A. Montgomery of Washington, D.C.; his son, Douglas P. Montgomery of Cabot; three granddaughters, Stella, Katie and Molly Troy; two step-grandchildren, Kristen Stewart and John McFarland; three step great-grandchildren; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Cindy Montgomery.
