Autopsy planned for Clarion girl found dead
CLARION TWP, Clarion County— An autopsy was planned this morning on the body of a 13-year-old girl found Sunday afternoon in a stream east of Clarion, authorities said. Shevy McGiffin had been missing since Friday evening when she left her house in Clarion Township to go to a nearby grocery store and discount store.
Members of the Clarion Volunteer Fire Department, part of the search team, discovered the body shortly before 4 p.m. near the Clarion River, state police said.
The body, which was on a sand bar area, was fully clothed. Investigators could not immediately say if the girl met with foul play.
There were numerous scrapes and bruises on the body, said Clarion County Coroner Terry Shaffer, which could have been the result of it being swept downstream across rocks and other debris in the water. He noted that heavy rains Friday caused the stream to rise suddenly.
Police said the girl left her house just before 7:15 p.m. to make the short walk to Comet Food Warehouse and Dollar General store on South Fifth Avenue. Cashiers at the Dollar General reportedly told investigators that the child purchased a coloring book that evening. She was last seen that night in the parking lot outside the store.
Authorities did not release any other information about the investigation pending the autopsy, which was to be conducted at 11 a.m. in Erie.
