LaVern E. Dunbar

LaVern E. Dunbar, 88, of Butler passed away Tuesday at VA Butler Healthcare Hospice Unit in Butler.

He was born July 30, 1928, in Forward Township, the son of the late Clyde LaVern Dunbar and Amanda Geyer Dunbar. LaVern was raised by his late grandparents, Stewart and Edith McCandless Dunbar.

LaVern was a U.S. Army World War II Air Corps veteran, and a member of the American Legion Lyndora Post 778 and the Mars VFW 7505. He also was a member and past elder of the Summit Presbyterian Church, the Saxonburg VFD, ARC, a former family coordinator for the Special Olympics and past secretary for the Butler County Umpires Association. He was a past president of the State PA Tax Claim Bureau Association and a past treasurer of the Butler County Republican Party. LaVern also belonged to the Sugar Mill Shuffleboard Club.

LaVern was a Metropolitan Life Insurance agent for 25 years, then he served as the Butler County director of assessment and tax claim for 12 years.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Helen J. Davison Dunbar; four daughters, Diana Dunbar of Butler, Patricia Daniels of Renfrew, Maxine (Gary) Riemer of Cabot and Nancy (Joel) Henderson of Butler; six grandchildren, Tabatha Bachman of Cabot, Amanda (Ryan) Gold of Butler, Mallory (Dustin) Starr of Cranberry Township, Joelene (Adam) Palace of Butler, Nathan (Melanie) Riemer of Grove City and Jacab (Tarah) Riemer of Valencia; five great-granddaughters, Kaylee and Madison Bachman, Ava and Olivia Palace, and Adia Gold; one great-grandson, Zachary Riemer; and one great-grandson, Starr, who will be born in December.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Vincent and Delmar Dunbar.

DUNBAR — Friends of LaVern E. Dunbar, who died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Jones, his pastor, officiating.Interment will be at the Summit United Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
