City man placed in county prison on drug charges
Police arrested a Butler man Wednesday, claiming he possessed more than 170 bags of heroin.
Jesse Markovitz, 36, of Butler was arrested for drug-related and firearms-related felonies after probation officers found hundreds of used stamp bags, needles and drug paraphernalia throughout his apartment, according to the police statement.
Police said Markovitz is on probation, and probation officers went to his apartment at 332 E. Brady St. around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 21. They observed a trash can which held heroin bundles, and a cigarette box containing more empty bags and one bundle of full stamp bags, police said.
A total of 172 full stamp bags of heroin marked “FOXY” were found at Markovitz’s apartment. A field test was conducted and gave a positive indication for heroin.
The officers said they also found two digital scales, two cell phones, and a .410 bolt action Savage Model 58 shotgun with two rounds in its magazine and a shell in the chamber, and markings on the shotgun tying it to Markovitz.
Because Markovitz has a felony drug violation, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was patted down for weapons and contraband, and when asked by the officers if he had anything else on him, he said he didn’t.
After being transported to prison, the suspect was searched and police said a corrections officer found four bundles of 10 stamp bags marked “FOXY” hidden under the insole of Markovitz’s shoe.
Markovitz admitted he had the heroin on him, and when allowed to use the bathroom in a holding cell before being searched, he allegedly hid the heroin under the insole, according to police.
A warrant for Markovitz’s cell phones was granted. One was locked, but the other showed multiple text conversations that indicated drug transactions and identified the phone as Markovitz’s.
Markovitz was charged with manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; possession of a controlled substance, contraband/inmate; criminal use of communication facility; and possession of a firearm prohibited, all felonies.
Bail was set at $75,000. He was placed in the Butler County Prison. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday at District Judge William Fullerton’s office in Butler.
