Early morning crash injures 3
MARSHALL TWP, Allegheny County — Two women and a teenager, all from Butler, were injured Tuesday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 79 near the Allegheny-Butler County line.
State police said Casey Claypool, 19, was northbound just after 7 a.m. when she lost control of her car and went off the highway. The vehicle traveled about 100 yards into a field west of the road.
According to investigators, the car hit a tree and spun around before ending in a storm drain.
Claypool suffered cuts and bruises and a punctured lung, a family member said. Her passengers — Melissa Wampler, no age given, and Wampler’s 16-year-old daughter — reportedly suffered more serious injuries.
All three were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Their conditions were not known this morning.
The trio was reportedly coming from the Pittsburgh International Airport, and they were traveling back to their homes on Virginia Avenue.
The accident happened, according to the family member, when Claypool fell asleep at the wheel.
The Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted police. An officer at the station Monday night referred all questions to the chief, who was unavailable.
