5 decorated trees go up at Diamond

Volunteers and members of the American Cancer Society and Butler Downtown will decorate five trees in Diamond Park for the upcoming holiday season. The centerpiece, a 20-foot tall tree, will be decorated by the cancer society with purple ribbons in honor, remembrance or support of donors' loved ones. Proceeds from the ribbon sales go to the cancer society.

There will be bigger, better and more trees in Diamond Park this holiday season.

Volunteers as well as members of the American Cancer Society and Butler Downtown are gearing up to decorate five trees in the park on Main Street this year.

The centerpiece is a 20-foot tree from Renick's Tree Farm to be decorated by the American Cancer Society in signature purple ribbons.

“This is the biggest one we've ever had,” said Leann Cramer of the American Cancer Society, which has decorated the park's tree for the past six years.

Each ribbon on the American Cancer Society tree is in honor, remembrance or support of somebody's loved one. Proceeds from ribbon sales go to the American Cancer Society.

Ribbons are available by visiting www.butlerlightupnight.com/ribbon.html.

The group was able to accommodate a larger tree this year because Gray Consulting and Gateway engineers designed a stand sturdy enough to hold it up. And Connor Gray fabricated the stand.

In addition to the large tree, four 8- to 10-foot high trees from Hill Farm also will be displayed in the park thanks to additional contributions from Butler County, Conlon Tarker and Butler County Ford.

Bob Dandoy, past president of Butler Downtown, is coordinating the effort with Kelly McElfresh Mikita, Joy Gray and Ray Conlon.

The trees will be decorated over the next few days and lighted after the parade Nov. 26.
