Winfield Road won't shut down

The Cabot bridge on Winfield Road will remain open while a new bridge is built. Construction of the new bridge also will eliminate a bend in the road.
Bridge will stay open during replacement

WINFIELD TWP — The $1.7 million replacement of the Cabot bridge on Winfield Road won't reroute traffic.

Deborah Casadei, public information officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said the current bridge will remain open while the new bridge is constructed adjacent to the south side.

“We're building it offline,” Casadei said.

She said the bridge will briefly close when the new one is tied to Winfield Road.

Constructing a more than 49-foot bridge slightly south of the current 33-foot one will eliminate a tight turn in the road.

“We'll deal with the bend,” she said.

Preliminary work on the project is under way with two houses demolished to make room for the alignment of the new bridge.

“It's just starting,” Casadei said.

Gregori Construction of Sarver is doing the work.

According to PennDOT, the average number of trips per day in both directions across the old bridge is 2,881.

Unique to the project are plastic poles attached horizontally to the north side of the old bridge. These delineators are meant to deter vehicles from traveling over the northern berm of the bridge.

Casadei said these delineators restrict traffic from driving over the beam on that side.

“The beam won't go anywhere, but it has lost its strength,” she said.

Casadei said the delineators were used in lieu of barrels due to maintenance issues.

“Vandalism and snow removal activities make it very difficult to maintain the barrels that (are) most commonly used to restrict travel,” she said.
