Fire erupts in Donegal Township

DONEGAL TWP — A barn and garage structure was destroyed in a fire around noon Friday at 147 Kamerer Road.

Bethany Schoentag, who owns the barn and lives in a house on the same property, said her 11-year-old daughter looked out the window of the home and saw the fire.

Schoentag and her 13-year-old son went down to the barn and retrieved several tools that were inside the barn.

“We just started pulling tools out until the smoke got too thick,” she said.

A skid loader was among the materials retrieved. Several animals were on the property, but no animals nor any people were injured.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was fully involved. Firefighters extinguished most of the fire using water in about 15 minutes.

The skid loader was used to tear apart the structure to further extinguish hot spots.

Chicora Assistant Fire Chief Jason Miller estimated the structure to be worth about $20,000, and the tools in the structure to be worth more than that. Schoentag said the structure was insured.

The cause of the fire was not determined. Miller said foul play is not suspected.

Volunteer fire departments from Bruin, Sugarcreek Township, Petrolia, Chicora, and East Brady responded. Petrolia EMS also was on scene.
