Pair escape house blaze
A fire burned a Christmas tree and much more early today at 313 Roosevelt Blvd.
According to Butler Fire Department Capt. Jim Kaufman, Amanda Zapp and her boyfriend, Ryan Bickford, went to sleep on Christmas, only to be awakened a few hours later by their barking dog.
When they went downstairs to see the cause of the commotion around 12:30 a.m., they discovered their Christmas tree on fire.
After grabbing a few belongings and ushering their pets out of the house, they called 911. Firefighters arrived on the scene to see the fire was venting out of three first-floor windows, and had spread across the living room and into the kitchen.
It also vented through a front window to a second-story window directly above it, causing an upstairs bedroom to catch fire.
Firefighters had the majority of the fire extinguished in 15 minutes using compressed air foam, and had the fire completely out in two hours.
There were no injuries.
Joe McKain, the property owner, was notified. The American Red Cross also was notified to provide food and shelter to the tenants, though Kaufman said he was not sure if they were going to use the Red Cross’ services or stay with family.
Kaufman estimated the damage to be $30,000 for the house and between $15,000 and $20,000 for its contents.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. A state police fire marshal will investigate.
Butler Fire Department, Butler Police Department, the VA Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service were on the scene.
