Participants to take icy plunge Sunday

Event benefits area charities

PARKER TWP — A cold challenge makes its return on New Year’s Day.

The 11th annual New Year’s Day 2017 Plunge, hosted by the Parker Polar Bear Club, will test the will of those who dare take on the icy challenge.

The plunge starts at 2 p.m. Sunday at Parker’s Landing on the Allegheny River. Registration is at 11 a.m.

The first 350 plungers will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Local vendors will have food available after the plunge.

A bonfire, refreshments and entertainment also will be provided.

“We hope to continue to have a great turnout and have a good time,” said club member Bob Bowser.

Bowser said between 300 and 350 people usually participate in the plunge.

All money will benefit area charities, including Cano Cares, Hunt of a Lifetime, Boys and Girls Club Along the Allegheny, area fire departments and local children in need.

Bowser said the plunge has raised between $4,500 and $5,000 in previous years.

“We want to help as many people as we can,” Bowser said. “We want to spread the wealth.”
