Fire burns Brady home
BRADY TWP — A house at 179 McBride Road suffered significant damage from a fire early this morning.
The residents of the house called 911 and safely got out around 4:11 a.m., according to Butler County 911 records. No one was injured.
More information about the residents was not immediately available.
Firefighters are unsure if the fire started in the ranch-style house’s chimney, but there was smoke and burning in the attic when they arrived, said Lt. Kurt Reasner with the Slippery Rock fire department.
The cause of the fire is unknown, though it was not considered suspicious.
Firefighters cut holes in the roof to stop the flames from spreading through insulation. There also was smoke and water damage to the ceiling and to the living room, dining room, kitchen and front foyer of the house. The amount of damage was unknown today, but the house was not livable, Reasner said.
Crews from the Slippery Rock, Harrisville, West Sunbury, Unionville and Prospect fire departments in Butler County, and Pine Township fire department in Mercer County were at the house for more than four hours. With no fire hydrants nearby they used tanker trucks and set up a portable tank for firefighters’ hoses.
The single-digit temperatures posed a challenge not only to the firefighters, but their equipment, Reasner said.
“There were at least two trucks that froze up. One of our engines is temporarily out of service, while we let a hose thaw out,” he said.
The department has other engines available and will not have any problems responding to other calls, he said.
