Teen facing charges as an adult

Butler police have charged a 17-year-old city boy as an adult for allegedly brandishing a handgun during an altercation last month outside a home.

The teenager is accused of pointing the gun at a young man who lives at the house on Michael Avenue near Center Avenue. Also in the home at the time was the man’s 17-year-old girlfriend and a young boy.

No one was injured in the incident that played out shortly before 7 p.m. Dec. 22.

Police on Friday obtained an arrest warrant for Bradin A. Bender, who turns 18 on Thursday, on a felony charge of aggravated assault.

He also faces misdemeanor charges of illegal possession of a firearm by a minor, terroristic threats and three counts of reckless endangerment.

The investigation began, according to court documents, after 19-year-old Chad Foote reported that he had been confronted by a male with a gun.

Foote told police that the suspect was one of three people who he believed had followed him home from a store. He described the male as being white and wearing a red Chicago Bulls sweat shirt.

The suspect, Foote recounted, pulled a pistol from his waistband and loaded it, documents said. He pointed it at the victim and made a derogatory comment.

Watching from the doorway was Foote’s girlfriend. Nearby was a 5-year-old boy, who also lives there, police said.

The suspect, later identified as Bender, eventually fled. Foote’s girlfriend apparently recognized the defendant.

Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam said Tuesday that the decision to charge the juvenile suspect as an adult — known as a “direct file” case — was made after consulting with the district attorney’s office.

Bender being close to his 18th birthday when the alleged crime was committed and the seriousness of the charges, Adam said, were reasons that the case was filed in adult court.
