Cherry man accused of stealing from neighbor

CHERRY TWP — A four-time convicted burglar is accused of breaking into a neighbor's mobile home on Findlay Road and stealing three rings that belonged to the victim's late husband.

The suspect, 37-year-old David J. Lewandowski of Cherry Township, later sold the rings at a Lawrence County gold store, authorities said.

State police on Monday obtained an arrest warrant for Lewandowski, who is charged with burglary, trespass, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and theft by deception.

Investigators suspect the defendant knew the 66-year-old victim would be gone Jan. 17 when he allegedly broke into her home.

She told police that when she returned home she noticed an unspecified item misplaced in her bedroom. When she checked a safe, according to court documents, she discovered $200 in currency and a $10 roll of quarters missing.

Also gone were her late husband's rings — a silver wedding band, a 1967 Knoch High School class ring and a gold ring with a red stone. The items were valued at a combined $600.

The victim, however, did not immediately notify police. Only after a neighbor told her that he, too, was missing items from his home, did she report the theft.

She recounted that she had a brief conversation with Lewandowksi earlier on Jan. 17. She remembered him asking her how long she would be gone and when she would be back.

Police on Sunday checked their precious metals website and found where the defendant allegedly had sold the jewelry for $288.

Court records showed that Lewandowski has 11 prior felony convictions. Among those felonies are three burglaries in 2012 and one in 2013, all in Allegheny County.
