Jean Basher Lloyd
Jean Basher Lloyd, 90, of Butler passed away Monday at Butler Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Oak Park, Ill., to the late Harry A. Basher and the late Marie Schofield Basher.
Mrs. Lloyd graduated in 1949 from Westminster College, where she met her adored husband, David. In 2010, they jointly received the Westminster Alumni Award for exceptional service to their community.
Jean was a homemaker who previously worked as an instructor for Butler County Community College, and she also served as a member of the BCCC Foundation and as director for Butler County Services for the Aging. As a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder, church school teacher and youth leader.
Jean was a member of the Eastern Region Advisory Training Council, the American Association of University Women and the Butler Community Kindergarten Association. Her article “Are You Concerned with Youth or Just About Them?” was originally published in 1967 by This Generation.
Gov. Dick Thornburgh appointed Jean to the Pennsylvania State Council on Aging in 1979 and 1981, and Gov. Milton Shapp named her to the Western Regional Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging from 1973 to 1979.
Mrs. Lloyd was on the boards of Butler Home Health Agency, Butler County Mental Health Association, the Butler Library and Family Counseling Center (Lutheran Service Society) and the Visiting Nurses Association Professional Advisory Board. She was a chairman of the Butler County Community Services Board, the Task Force on Aging of Beaver/Butler Presbytery and the Butler Country Club Junior Golf Program. Jean was a seminar and workshop leader at the Pennsylvania Conferences on Aging for “Area Agencies on Aging” in 1977, “Crime and the Elderly” in 1978 and “Issues in Gerontology” in 1979. She served on the Boarding Homes, Health, and Welfare Council of Butler County, and was a president of the Butler Junior Women’s Club, the secretary for the Butler Country Club Women’s Golf Association, a Brownie and senior Girl Scout troop leader, a Cub Scout den mother and a PTA member. Mrs. Lloyd enjoyed reading, golfing and gardening.
She is survived by her husband, David, who she married July 29, 1950; two sons, David L. Lloyd Jr. of New York City, and Lawrence E. Lloyd of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; one daughter, Lydia Olson of Roswell, Ga.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Diane Pill of Delaware; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry.
LLOYD — Friends of Jean Basher Lloyd, who died Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, will be received from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.
Burial will take place at the North Side Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 230 E. Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. Dr. James Swanson officiating.
