A 25-year-old man was still on a hospital respirator Tuesday night, hours after suffering an apparent heroin-related overdose at the Dunkin’ Donuts shop in Butler, authorities said,

Nicholas R. Hainer of Butler was admitted at Butler Memorial Hospital following the call to the store on North Main Street shortly after 4:15 p.m.

His condition was not known this morning.

Employees notified 911 that a man had been inside the locked men’s bathroom for about 20 minutes and was not answering. Butler firefighters forced open the door and found Hainer laying facedown on the floor.

“He was not conscious and not breathing,” said Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam.

Emergency crews also noticed what they described as a “large amount” of blood on his face.

“Apparently,” Adam said, “that was from him falling down.”

Paramedics could find no pulse when they started tending to him. They began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used a bag-valve mask to establish an airway.

Medics finally got a pulse, police said, and Hainer was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He was reported to be on a ventilator as of Tuesday night, according to a police report.

A telephone call to the hospital was not immediately returned this morning.

Adam said officers recovered a used syringe and metal spoon in the bathroom. They also found an empty stamp bag of suspected heroin on the rim of the toilet.
