The Butler girls track and field team totaled five first-place finishes to come away with the team title from the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Championship Meet, held Saturday at West Mifflin's Titan Stadium.

Earning individual gold medals were Taylor Weaver in the pole vault (11 feet, 8 inches), Alexis Leech in the 400 run (56.39 seconds) and Liz Simms in the 800 (2:18.2).

The Golden Tornado also placed first in two relays — the 4x800 (Erin LeMay, Maggie Welty, Emma LeMay and Simms, 9:43.31) and the 4x400 (Maddie Tonini, Simms, Shana Hoy and Leech, 4:00.69).

Butler amassed 110 points in the 28-team event, beating out runner-up Oakland Catholic's 81 points.

The Golden Tornado boys turned in a strong showing with Noah Beveridge posting a meet-record time of 4:22.7 in the 1,600 run.

Jack Codispot won the pole vault at a height of 12-8.

Butler scored 62 points to place third in the boys standings, five points behind champion South Fayette.

Big Red Invitational — Slippery Rock's Brady Dalton won the girls' 100 and 300 hurdle events with times of 16.14 and 46.04, respectively, to help the Rockets place second with 145 points at West Middlesex High School's stadium.

Wilmington earned the team title with 159 points.

Also taking individual wins were Harley Pflugh in the 3,200 run (12:52) and Sierra Nagy in the long jump (15-9.5).

In the boys meet, Slippery Rock (106 points) also was runner-up to Wilmington.

The Rockets' 4x100 relay quartet of Eithen Beckwith, Ryan Putorti, Chase Wolinski and Rod Williams took first place with a time of 46.14.

Softball

Knoch erupted for five runs in the second inning in a 10-3 victory over Simon Kenton High School in the championship game of the Pete Noll Invitational on Saturday in Morning View, Ky.

Erin Luffy totaled three hits, including a double, to pace Knoch's 15-hit attack.

Junior pitcher Celia Knappenberger struck out five and walked three in four shut-out innings of work to earn the win.

The Knights successfully defended their title in the tournament from last season, winning four games in two days.

Knappenberger struck out six with no walks and just one hit allowed in five innings in a 10-0 semifinal victory against Cooper High School. She and teammate Monica Gourley both tallied three hits at the plate.

In a 3-1 win over Bishop Brossart on Friday, Amanda Fischer tallied 14 strikeouts against just one walk in a complete-game effort. She allowed the one run on three hits.

Luffy opened the tournament for the Knights with the pitching victory in a 15-2 thumping of St. Henry earlier Friday. She set six batters down on strikes and walked two in five innings.

Offensively, Knappenberger singled twice and doubled twice.

The undefeated Knights (7-0) host Section 1-4A foe Mt. Pleasant today at Laura Doerr Park. The Vikings won the WPIAL Class AAA title last year.
