Man who allegedly took woman's wallet sought

Butler police are seeking a suspected robber who snatched a wallet from a woman’s hand Sunday night as she walked on Center Avenue.

It didn’t take police long to identify the suspect. The 48-year-old victim, they say, knew him.

District Judge William Fullerton on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Preston A. Bartmas, 33, of Summit Township. He is charged with robbery, theft and receiving stolen property.

Jeanette Tilley of Butler told police that she was walking about 9:20 p.m., when the defendant approached her from behind on Center Avenue near Cliff Street.

She admitted being startled, and while talking with Bartmas, according to documents, “realized that he was under the influence.”

The defendant is accused of grabbing Tilley’s wallet and running off. She said he got into a red vehicle, which drove away eastbound on Center Avenue.

She told police that her wallet contained $485 in currency as well as numerous cards and other items, documents said.

She described the wallet as being green and gray with nail polish and glitter on the outside of it.
