Wednesday — Police filed drug charges against four Elk County teenagers stemming from a traffic stop last month on Route 356 in Buffalo Township. A trooper stopped the teen’s car about 3 p.m. April 16 when he noticed its license plate belonged to a different vehicle.
The driver, Kyle J. Meyer, 19, of Kersey, appeared to be impaired, according to court documents. Police arrested Meyer and his front seat passenger, Maurissa A. Curley, 19, also of Kersey, after learning both were wanted on warrants in Elk County.
During the stop, documents said, Curley and two other passengers — Travis A. Cauvel, 19, and Sarah L. Wickett, 19, both of St. Marys — admitted they had heroin on them.
“Cauvel related that he had purchased the heroin in Pittsburgh,” according to a police affidavit, “and distributed the heroin to the other occupants of the vehicle.”
A search of the vehicle, police said, turned up an empty stamp bag of suspected heroin in the driver’s door, a marijuana pipe on the front passenger seat, and a syringe on Wickett’s purse.
Meyer was subsequently taken for a blood test at ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township, Armstrong County. Toxicology reports showed the presence of marijuana and morphine free, which can be a metabolite of drugs including heroin.
Meyer is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Cauvel, 19, of St. Marys is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Curley and Wickett are both charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
7:42 a.m. May 10 — Benjamin L. Lechien, 31, of Summit Township was arrested after he allegedly was caught in the act of breaking into a neighbor’s vehicle on Portman Road.
The vehicle owner and a witness already had Lechien detained by the time troopers got there, according to court documents. They told police they had seen the defendant enter the unlocked pickup truck that was parked in the owner’s driveway.
Both the owner and witness also saw Lechien rummaging through the truck. They went to the vehicle, took him out and held him until police got there.
Police said they searched the defendant, who appeared intoxicated, and found two prescription medications for which he did not have prescriptions.
Lechien was arraigned on charges of theft from a vehicle, attempted theft from a vehicle, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and public drunkenness. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.
