Butler Kmart to close
The Kmart store in Butler's Pullman Square is one of 49 stores that Sears Holdings — which owns the company — plans to close later this year.
The news comes as part of a report by the publication Business Insider, which on Tuesday published what it said was a list of store closures released internally by the company. Sears Holdings could not immediately be reached Wednesday to confirm the report.
The closing of the Butler Kmart is part of a nationwide move to close more than 200 Sears and Kmart stores. The first round of closures was announced earlier this year.
Over the last five years the company has pared down its number of stores from 2,073 to fewer than 1,500, as it struggles to return to profitability amid lackluster sales, hundreds of millions of dollars in loan debt, and instability in among its executive ranks.
It also follows the closure last year of the Sears store at the Clearview Mall. That closure was part of a nationwide shutdown of 50 stores that was announced after Sears Holdings reported a $580 million fourth quarter loss following the 2015 holiday season
