DUI charges filed

CRANBERRY TWP — A Lancaster Township man was charged with speeding and drunken driving after allegedly going more than 80 mph down Route 19.

Benjamin Mitro, 29, waived all charges to county court Friday, where he will be arraigned July 24.

A Cranberry Township police officer sitting at a red light eastbound at Freedom Road and Route 19 shortly after midnight March 31 noticed the car in front of him, a silver Subaru, inching forward past the white stop bar.

When the light turned green, the Subaru turned left onto Route 19 north and sped off while passing another vehicle in the right lane. The police officer began a pace clock of the vehicle at 72 mph in a 45 mph zone after they passed Short Street.

According to the affidavit, the vehicle changed lanes near Rochester Road without signaling and continued to speed up going down Route 19. The officer said the Subaru's speed was well over 80 mph.

After being pulled over, the driver, identified as Mitro, said he thought the speed limit was 55 mph.

Mitro failed field sobriety tests and tested positive for alcohol with a preliminary breath test. When taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry, Mitro refused a blood test and refused to sign the refusal form, according to the affidavit.
