Linda Ruth Cressman
Linda Ruth Cressman, 74, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., passed away on May 28 afternoon after her valiant battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 21, 1942, Linda Ruth McDeavitt, to Richard James McDeavitt and Grace Cratty McDeavitt in Prospect.
Linda graduated high school in Slippery Rock in 1960 and Slippery Rock State Teachers College in 1964.
She married Charles Philip Cressman Jr. on Aug. 8, 1964. They lived in Lancaster County where their two children were born. Linda encouraged her children to be happy, honest and to follow their dreams.
The family lived in Margate, N.J., and then in Beasley's Point, N.J., where she worked as an elementary school teacher and librarian. Following their dreams, they moved to Union Hall, Va., on Smith Mountain Lake and built a log home. There, Linda taught at Dudley Elementary School.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she also taught Sunday school and volunteered as a Stevens minister.
Linda was a wife, mother, teacher and organizer of book clubs and family reunions. She was known as a gardener, cook, friend and a wonderfully animated storyteller. Linda was also a creator of crafts and quilts; she was a lover of laughter and a lifter of spirits.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, C. Philip Cressman Jr.; her daughter, Cindy Collins of Salisbury, Md.; her granddaughters, Kaylyn and Lauren; her son, Chip Cressman, and his wife, Heidi, of Roanoke, Va.; and her grandson, Nick.
We would like to express our gratitude to family, friends and Carilion Hospice for their support and love.
