MIDDLESEX TWP — Police say alcohol and speed were factors in a Sunday night crash on Route 8 that left four people and one dog hurt and another dog dead.

Hospitalized in Pittsburgh were Robert Radwan, 45; his wife, Charlene Wellington-Radwan, 52; and Kyle Wenzel, 21, all of Renfrew; and Anthony Trapani, 46, of Middlesex Township.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

Radwan was driving south on Route 8 near Kilgallen Road about 10 p.m. when his Ford F-150 pickup truck crossed over two lanes before colliding with the northbound 2016 Lexus that Trapani was driving, township police said.

“It was a sideways, T-bone collision,” said patrolman Bryan Costanzo. He said it did not appear that either driver applied his brakes before the collision.

The front of the car and the side back portion of the truck sustained the brunt of the damage.

Wellington-Radwan was ejected from the truck that she was riding in. Wenzel, another passenger in the pickup, managed to crawl out of the vehicle.

Police and emergency crews found Wellington-Radwan and Wenzel laying on the road when they got there and initially believed both had been thrown out of the truck.

Both drivers were still in their vehicles immediately after the collision.

A passing motorist stopped and crawled onto the roof of the Lexus, and eventually pulled Trapani out through the sun roof, Costanzo said.

A medical helicopter later flew Wellington-Radwan to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries.

Ambulances took Trapani and Wenzel to UPMC Presbyterian and Robert Radwan to Allegheny General Hospital. The extent of their injuries was not known.

Two labradoodles, which were riding in the truck, were thrown onto the road. One later died at the scene, Costanzo said, and the other dog, which suffered what appeared to be a paralyzing injury, was taken to a veterinary hospital in Ohio Township, Allegheny County.

Investigators said all three occupants of the truck smelled of alcohol and police say they found bottles of beer inside and outside the pickup.

Costanzo said police plan to obtain search warrants for both vehicles and the medical records of both drivers and both passengers as part of their investigation.

A state police accident reconstruction team assisted at the scene.
