Burglary sentence given Worth Twp. homes targeted
An Altoona woman, who was charged alongside her ex-husband and another person with two burglaries in 2015, was sentenced to state prison in Butler County Court on Thursday.
Michelle C. Book, 37, was sentenced to 18 to 36 months in a state correctional institution and 36 months of state probation following her release, by Judge William Shaffer.
Shaffer allowed Book to report to the prison on Sept. 7 for commitment to establish a new care provider for her children.
Book previously pleaded guilty to felony conspiracy to burglary and criminal trespass in two cases. She was charged alongside her ex-husband Shawn M. Book, 40, and Toni M. Arnold, 42, after incidents on June 24, 2015, and July 3, 2015.
Book's attorney, William Caye II, said his client is a “recovering addict and a rehabilitating parent” who accepted responsibility for her role in the incidents, and cooperated with law enforcement by providing “substantial assistance” — detailed information and testimony regarding the incidents and others involved — in Butler and Lawrence counties.
He said Book has been sober for two years and recently won back custody of her 3-year-old twins in May, while also recently fighting and winning a battle against cancer.
“She's here today not with a second chance but basically with her last chance,” he said. “She has come such a long way in her recovery and raising children while fighting cancer and addiction.”
Book told Shaffer that she has “worked very diligently to earn the title of mother back,” and is now a certified recovery specialist, working in the program “that saved my life.”
“I try to use my past, my mistakes, my problems in order to help these women,” she said.
Police said the incidents occurred at a home on Studebaker Road in Worth Township on June 24, 2015, and a Roher Road home in Worth Township on July 3, 2015.
Police said Shawn Book allegedly broke into the Roher Road home through a second-story glass door and attempted to steal medication before he was chased away when the resident reached for a gun, according to court documents.
Arnold was identified after she returned to the home to attempt to collect items left behind by Book. When police interviewed her, she alleged that Shawn and Michelle Book were involved and she admitted to a second incident — the Studebaker Road home — where they allegedly stole several cases of ammunition.
Shawn Book is currently being held on house arrest awaiting appeals in his case to the state Superior Court, after two mistrials in the case.
Book previously faced trial on June 21, 2016, and then again on April 18, both of which ended in mistrial.
Arnold previously pleaded guilty to two counts of felony burglary and was sentenced to 18 to 60 months in state prison, according to court records.
