DUI charged twice in 2 weeks

Callery man accused in incidents

Adams Township Police have accused a Callery man of driving under the influence of opioids on two consecutive Thursdays.

Clayton Spithaler is facing multiple counts of DUI, drug possession and other traffic related charges after police allegedly caught him twice behind the wheel under the influence of opioids and alcohol.

Police said they responded to reports of a reckless driver on the night of July 20, when they found Spithaler driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the road headed toward the officer. Adams officer Jeffrey Thompson pulled Spithaler over and noticed signs of intoxication.

Police said they found five heroin stamp bags in his car on the console. He was arrested and transported to Butler Memorial Hospital. At the hospital Spithaler overdosed and was revived with Narcan.

Police said he admitted to injecting heroin before driving his car and submitted to a blood test. His blood tested positive for Fentanyl.

A week later, on July 27, police responded to a burglar alarm in Evans City. When they arrived they found a truck that had crashed into a building.

“The truck had gone through a front pillar and then proceeded to travel through (a) large glass pane,” said arresting officer Alexander Mills. “There (were) bricks and glass all over the front walkway of the building as well as inside on the floor in front of the main counter area.”

Inside the truck, police found Spithaler, passed out behind the wheel.

Police woke him after several tries and questioned him about that night's sequence of events.

“Spithaler had no idea where he was, and didn't even know what had happened to him,” Mills said.

Spithaler was cuffed and put in the back of a patrol car as police searched his vehicle.

Inside the truck, officers said they found a yellow uncapped syringe and two blue cigarette packs with white stamp bags in and around them.

Mills took Spithaler to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for a blood test, which Spithaler agreed to. Officers then took him to stay with an acquaintance in Evans City.

A blood test was done at the hospital. It read positive for alcohol and morphine, police said.

Spithaler will be arraigned in October on the accumulated charges.

He had also been charged with drug possession last May.
