Honor their sacrifice

On a World War II headstone in the cemetery at Monte Casino, Italy, is an incription that reads, “To My Son, Who Gave The Greatest Gift of All, An Unlived Life.”

This week, the American Veterans Traveling tribute brings the Vietnam Wall to the grounds of the Butler VA. I urge all of our patriotic citizens and their children to visit and honor the Butler County servicemen who gifted us with their unlived lives.

Of special significance is the name Sgt. Joseph Goerge Kusick, a Green Beret hero who gave his life on a secret mission in Laos in November 1967. His remains were never recovered. This past week, President Trump signed legislation naming the Butler VA’s Community Living Center after this Amerian hero.

So please come visit “The Wall,” honor Butler County’s Vietnam War heroes, and, after 50 years, welcome Sgt. Joseph Kusick home. We veterans appreciate when you thank us for our service. Now is the opportunity for all to thank those who gave the ultimate sacrifice — a life unlived.
