Butler to open season at Penn Hills

Butler's Brandon Fleeger delivers a pass against Penn Hills at Art Bernardi Stadium.

PENN HILLS — Butler's game plan for Friday night's season-opening football game at Penn Hills is rather basic.

Don't let the speedy Indians slip loose and allow the game to slip away as a result.

While Butler was struggling in a scrimmage at Knoch last Friday, Penn Hills played a Week Zero game and shut out Plum, 26-0. Quarterback Hollis Mathis threw for 262 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Indians limited Plum to 14 net yards rushing. The Golden Tornado are hoping for much more production than that in the ground game.

Penn Hills has a new coach this season in Jon LeDonne, who had been guiding Shaler the past couple of years. LeDonne inherits an Indians' team that returns five starters on offense and four defensively.

LeDonne says his biggest concern about Butler is the size of the Tornado's offensive and defensive lines.

Penn Hills leads the all-time series between the teams, 12-9-1.

A full report will appear in the Butler Eagle.
