Arrests close in Freeport burglary

Police say 2 male suspects identified

FREEPORT — State police say they have identified two suspects in a weekend smash-and-grab burglary at the BP convenience store on Buffalo Street. The two burglars made off with money.

One of the crooks less than two hours later returned to the same store and took more loot, police said.

Trooper Katelyn Statzer said Wednesday that arrests are imminent but she would not identify the suspects. Neither is in custody, she said, and warrants have not yet been issued.

The suspects, both men, at 1:56 a.m. threw a pair of bricks through the glass at the building to get inside the store. The business is equipped with a burglar alarm, Statzer said.

The men took an undetermined amount of currency from one of the cash register drawers and quickly fled.

Police, however, were not immediately notified of the break-in.

At 3:48 a.m., one of the suspects returned to the scene of the alleged crime, Statzer said, and entered the store the same way he got in the first time. He took more money from the register and several packs of cigarettes.

Statzer would not say how police identified the suspects. The store is equipped with a video surveillance system,

State police are investigating the case because Freeport police had no one on duty at the time.
