Seneca Valley School Board at its meeting Monday:

Deferred the vote on choosing an architect firm with which to begin negotiations for the design of a new Evans City Elementary and Middle School. School board President Jim Nickel said they need more time to discuss the four firms in the running and come to a consensus. Discussion will continue at the Oct. 2 meeting, with a board vote projected for Oct. 16.

Reported that preliminary enrollment numbers are up over last school year. Enrollment K-12 in 2017-18 is 7,187, an increase of 45 students from last year and 60 students from two years ago, said Tracy Vitale, school superintendent. Vitale said overall the state has declining enrollment, but Seneca Valley and neighboring suburban schools have seen slight increases.

Approved buying cyber risk insurance for $14,690. Lynn Burtner, district business manager, said the insurance comes as the threat of loss from cyber attacks grows and becomes more sophisticated. Solicitor Matt Hoffman said school districts are a target-rich environment with employee, student and parent information in its databases. “We see a lot of our school clients moving in this direction,” he said.
