Shirley Jean Osborne

Shirley Jean Osborne, 72, of Butler passed away Sunday at UPMC Passavant in North Hills. She bravely battled ALS for the last year.

She was born Aug. 18, 1945, in Erie, the second youngest of four daughters, to the late Milton George and Mary Krantz Berringer.

Shirley attended Penn State-Behrend and graduated from Slippery Rock University. She earned a master's degree from Edinboro University. She retired in 2006 after 35 years as a caring teacher at McQuistion Elementary in Butler.

Shirley loved traveling, spending time with her church community, teaching, gardening and reading. She enjoyed her bowling leagues and spending time with friends and family. She was a member of Nixon United Methodist Church, where she had been a very active member.

Surviving are her son, Sean Osborne of Butler; her daughter, Wendy (Christopher) Richards of Columbus, Ohio; two grandsons, Maxton and Everett Richards; her sisters, Marilyn (Bob) Saunders of Fairview, and Laurene Berringer and Nancy Martin, both of Harborcreek, Pa.; her sister-in-law, Marcia Osborne of Youngwood; two nieces, Beth Spellman of Pittsburgh and Laura Martin of Erie; and her dear friend, Bob Ficca of Butler.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, R. Kent Osborne, who died Aug. 26, 2002; and her brothers-in-law, Tim Martin and Philip Osborne.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the friends and family who supported Shirley this last year with their many cards, flowers and visits. Extra thanks goes to her dedicated caregivers, Linda, Nancy, Mary Beth, Petra, Melanie and especially Judy, who provided comforting and loving care.

OSBORNE — Friends of Shirley Jean Osborne, who died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Friday at Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.
