John D. Staiger

John D. Staiger, 90, of Butler passed away Wednesday at VNA Inpatient Hospice.

He was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Butler to the late Daniel Staiger and the late Julia Kline Staiger.

John worked in his early years at Iarrapino Muffler and Brake Shop. He then worked for Pullman Standard until its closing. From there, he was a custodian for Butler Senior High School, retiring in 2008.

John attended Mount Zion Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

John enjoyed bowling, hunting with his son, fishing and cribbage. He liked to do woodworking, building bird feeders and picnic sets. John took pleasure in feeding the birds, deer and going for long drives.

John is survived by his wife, Guretta Staiger, whom he married Dec. 17, 1999; one son, Bruce Staiger and his wife, Regina of Butler; one daughter, Kathy Jonson and her husband, Bill of Atwell, Ohio; four granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters; five step-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia McClelland of Butler; one brother, Hugh Staiger of Palmyra, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jo Staiger; and one brother, Merle Staiger.

STAIGER — Friends of John D. Staiger, who died Wednesday Oct. 4, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St. Butler. Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation at 4 p.m. with Pastor Ben Oesterling of Mount Zion Baptist Church, officiating.Burial will take place at Greenlawn Burial Estates.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
