Albert Lyman Schartner
Albert Lyman Schartner, the beloved husband of Kathleen McBride Schartner, died Wednesday at Sherwood Oaks, Cranberry Township.
He was born in Wakefield, R.I., July 18, 1931.
Following the death of his parents, Albert Carl Schartner and Ella May Cook Schartner, Al was adopted in 1938 by an aunt and uncle, William and Elizabeth Wright.
After attending the Boston University College of General Education, he received a B.A. in English from Westminster College, and B.D. and M.Div. degrees from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, as well as an M.A. in health care administration and Gerontology from the University of North Texas.
After their marriage in 1954, Albert served seven years as pastor of the Bethel U.P. Church in Irwin.
Called by Carlisle Presbytery, he was employed for more than 30 years as CEO of Presbyterian Senior Living, formerly known as Presbyterian Homes, Inc., developing retirement communities in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Ohio and Maryland. During these years he served on the Presbyterian Board of Pensions and as President of the Board of Education of the Northern York School District and as President of the Carlisle Rotary Club.
Returning to the Pittsburgh area upon retirement, his activities have included service as consultant and planner with Executive Service Corps and Board President and violinist with both the Pittsburgh Philharmonic and the Tuesday Musical Club.
Albert was the loving father of Dale E. (Martha Steele) of Beaver, Carl W. (Cynthia Bean) of Highland Park, and Beth Anne Lawson (H. Jeffrey) of Sarasota, Fla.; and the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren.
SCHARTNER — A memorial service for Albert Lyman Schartner, who died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at Sherwood Oaks.
