4 water fixtures show levels of lead or copper
JEFFERSON TWP — Yet another test of the water fixtures in South Butler School District buildings has revealed that four remain affected — but neither students nor staff use those fixtures, according to district officials.
Eric Buzza of Gannett Fleming told the school board at their Wednesday meeting that of the 262 drinking and food preparation water fixtures initially tested last year, four still tested positive at the end of January for lead or copper.
Two of the fixtures are in the intermediate high school, one in the high school and one in the primary center, Buzza said.
None are used by students or staff, he said.
“The teachers agreed they don't really use those fixtures anymore,” Buzza told the board.
Superintendent David Foley said the fixtures have been bagged to prevent them from being used, and they were not used between the current study and the last one several months ago.
Buzza said the district's fixtures should be tested again to ensure the problems seen with the four fixtures does not turn up in another area in the water system.
He said he is pleased with the water situation at South Butler, which saw water and lead issues with 34 fixtures mitigated since July. Most of the fixtures were changed out.
“Really, everything is in great shape here,” Buzza said.
He recommended testing the four fixtures again in a few months.
Foley suggested that the board's facilities committee meet in the near future to discuss mitigation of the issues at the four fixtures plus a handful of other issues.
