William F. “Bill” Pontius

William F. “Bill” Pontius, 83, of Butler died Sunday.

He was born in Butler on July 18, 1934. Bill was the son of the late John N. and the late Mildred Pontius Sr. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Pontius; and his brother, John “Jack” (Vivian) Pontius Jr.

Bill married Joanne Eakin Pontius in 1967.

He graduated from Butler High School and the University of Cincinnati with a degree in metallurgical engineering.

Bill began his career in a co-op program through Armco Steel and retired as a works metallurgist in 1993. After retirement from Armco, he worked several years as a consultant in the steel industry.

David Todd was a lifelong friend of Bill's. They went to school together and spent a lot of their free time together on the golf course, watching sports, playing bridge and traveling. Judy Todd was also a good friend of Bill and Joanne.

Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joanne. She currently is living in Wake Forest, N.C.

He is also survived by his daughter, Rebecca “Becky” and her husband, Peter Karidis, and their children, Andrei and Natalia, of Wake Forest; his son, Douglas and his wife, Julie Pontius, of Erie; two nieces, Lisa (David) Malota and Michelle (David) Phillips; and many other nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.

PONTIUS — Visitation for William F. “Bill” Pontius, who died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, will be from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. The service will immediately follow at noon at the funeral home.Interment will be at Butler County Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a favorite charity or the YMCA Camp/Armco Park, 339 N.
