Chester Michael Spohn

Chester Michael Spohn, 92, of Herman peacefully passed away Thursday afternoon at the Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.

Born Nov. 25, 1925, in Butler, he was a son of the late Alfred and Mary Marra Spohn.

He graduated from Butler High School with his senior year interrupted by being drafted into the U.S. Navy and serving aboard the LSM 301. Chester served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean conflict.

He retired in 1977 from Butler Armco, where he was employed for 33 years as a machinist.

Chester married the “girl next door.” He kept a large garden and loved mowing and keeping things well maintained. He was a hard-working individual who in his younger active years loved hunting coon and deer. He thoroughly enjoyed history and sharing family stories with his family and grandchildren.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman. He formerly belonged to VFW Post 249 of Butler and the Herman Volunteer Fire Co.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Stewart Spohn, whom he married Feb. 26, 1949; two children, Chester Spohn II and his wife, Janice, of Butler, and Linda Green and her husband, Thomas, of Butler; two brothers, Joseph Spohn and his wife, Mary Ann, of Kansas City, Kan., and Michael Spohn and his wife, Elizabeth, of Cabot; and three sisters, Genevieve Moore of Butler, Camilla Adams of Butler, and Mary Lou Bollinger of Butler.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Chester Spohn III, Lisa Foley and Amanda Green; and five great-grandchildren, Delaney Hyde, Chester Spohn IV, Anaya Spohn, Silas Spohn and Victoria Foley.

Chester was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Spohn and Alfred Spohn Jr.

SPOHN — Friends of Chester Michael Spohn, who died Thursday, March 15, 2018, will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday from St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 821 Herman Road, Herman.Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery.Military honors will be accorded at the church by VFW Post 249, American Legion Post 778, and American Legion Post 117.In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the food cupboard and outreach programs of St. Mary's Church.For more information, please visit www.martinfh.net.
