J. Calvin Sammons
J. Calvin Sammons, 87, of Ellport, Pa., passed away in a car accident on Friday.
Born on Dec. 22, 1930, he was the son of Dana and Jean (Watson) Sammons from Wattsburg, Erie County.
Calvin was a U.S. Army veteran, who later earned a master's degree in dairy science from Penn State University.
He served as a county agricultural extension agent for Penn State Extension in Washington and Lawrence counties for 35 years. Calvin truly enjoyed his career assisting the agricultural community, including the many 4-H clubs.
A true community servant, many civic groups were blessed by his willingness to do the practical work to help the organization succeed. He spent many of his later years with the Ellwood City Lions Club, the Ellwood City Historical Society and Meals on Wheels. He took on personal responsibility for maintaining flower gardens at Ewing Park.
Calvin was a gifted repairman who kept his toolbox in his truck ready to go. Calvin particularly enjoyed helping his sister, Rosalyn, and his son, David, on their dairy farms.
Calvin was a member of Third Presbyterian Church of New Castle since 1960, where again, his practical servant heart was known by all.
Calvin is survived by four children, Susan (Michael Garner) Sammons of Meeker, Colo., John (Terry) Sammons of New Wilmington, Pa., Marilyn (Henry) Morphis of Valparaiso, Ind., and David (Bonnie) Sammons of Horse Cave, Ky.; his brother, Fred (Barbara) Sammons of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a sister, Rosalyn (Lee) Kummer of Evans City; his sisters-in-law, Olive Sammons of Wattsburg, Pa., and Ann Sammons of Stewart, Fla.; his seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Calvin was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Marion; his second wife of 15 years, Vera; and his brothers, George and Jim; and a grandson, Paul.
SAMMONS — Friends and family of J. Calvin Sammons, who died Friday, April 6, 2018, will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. until noon Thursday at Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, followed immediately by a memorial service. The Rev. Rosalyn Kummer and the Rev.
