School musicals nominated for 2018 Mancini Awards

Students from several Butler County high schools are among the nominees for the 2018 Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards.

The 24th annual awards recognize students from Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties for outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony at 7 p.m. May 20 at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland, Beaver County.

This year’s nominees from county schools are:

Best Actor

Brecken Farrell as Freddy in Knoch’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and Jace Franco as Robert in Slippery Rock’s “The Drowsy Chaperone”

Best Actress

Halle Surgil as Wednesday Addams in Freeport’s “The Addams Family” and Sammy Jo Barnes as Christine Colgate in Knoch’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”

Best Supporting Actor

Tanner Matko as Augustus Gloop in Mars’ “Willy Wonka” and Kenneth Foran as Man in Chair in Slippery Rock’s “The Drowsy Chaperone”

Best Supporting Actress

Torrance Bajuszik as Jolene Oakes in Knoch’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”

Best Musical Budget 1

Freeport for “The Addams Family” and Slippery Rock for “The Drowsy Chaperone”

The Community Outreach Award was announced for Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School, and the Slippery Rock University Department of Dance Scholarship was awarded to Alexis Frye from Knoch High School.

The Mancini winners for Best Actor and Best Actress will join the winners from the CLO’s Gene Kelly Awards as well as winners from across the nation in New York City for a nine day experience including private coaching, master classes, and rehearsals with theater professionals.
