Dek hockey game leads to violence during handshake
CRANBERRY TWP — More than bad sportsmanship was allegedly on display last month when a dek hockey handshake turned violent.
According to documents filed Wednesday, Adam Christopher Errett, 24, of Freedom, Beaver County, is facing charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault for an incident that took place May 9.
According to the complaint, officers were called to a Cranberry Township dek hockey rink on Rowan Road for a reported assault.
Reports indicate the game had ended, and the participating teams were shaking hands. The complaint states Errett walked past the opposing team and toward the exit before turning around and walking toward the victim, who was facing the opposite direction.
Errett allegedly struck the victim on the right side of the head with a closed fist, which caused the victim to fall to the ground. The victim was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry, where an evaluation showed he sustained facial fractures to his right orbital bone and sinus. To repair the injuries, the victim had to undergo surgery, the complaint states.
Errett was arraigned Thursday by Magistrate David T. Kovach and was released on his own recognizance. A July 27 preliminary hearing is scheduled.
