Police seeking hit-and-run driver who struck bicyclist
CRANBERRY TWP — Authorities are looking for the unknown driver who struck a bicyclist Sunday night on Freedom Road and did not stop.
The man riding the BMX-style bike suffered a “large laceration,” said Cranberry Township police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, and he was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. The extent of his injuries and his condition were not known Monday.
Police did not immediately release the man's name. He is believed to be in his 20s and had apparently been staying at a home on Robinhood Drive, Mascellino said.
Officers responded about 10:40 p.m. to that home for a call of a bicyclist hit by a vehicle. Investigators subsequently determined the man was actually struck on Freedom Road near the Turnpike bridge.
Police suspect he was struck, possibly from behind, by a Chevrolet Traverse. A piece from a vehicle of that make and model, police said, was found at the crash scene.
The suspect vehicle, Mascellino said, “should have damage to the right front bumper.”
Police have found no witnesses and it was not known if the victim was able to provide any other information about the vehicle that hit him.
Anyone with information abut the hit-and-run crash is asked to call police at 776-5180, or 911.
