Drivers identified in early morning crash

Second man pronounced dead at hospital

Two men died this morning in a two-vehicle crash in Butler Township that sent both vehicles down an embankment and into a creek at Greenwood Drive and South Benbrook Road, authorities said.

Killed were Thomas P. Shaffer, 85, of Ellwood City and Glenn S. Davis Jr., 66, of Harrisville.

Butler Township police said the collision happened just before 7:30 a.m., when Shaffer ran a stop while eastbound on Greenwood Drive in a van.

The van broadsided Davis' pickup truck, which was traveling south on South Benbrook Road.

Shaffer was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy is to be conducted on Shaffer's body this evening. Authorities said no other autopsy was planned. The crash remains under investigation.
