Annual bike safety rodeo teaches rules of the road
CRANBERRY TWP — Bicycle riders of all ages are welcome to test their skills, get their bikes tuned up and learn the rules of the road at the fourth annual Bike Safety Rodeo.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Park, in the parking lot near the Kids Castle Playground.
“We feel bikes are becoming more and more popular on our roads,” said Sgt. William Ahlgren of Cranberry Township police. “If we can teach younger kids the proper way to conduct themselves on a bike and what the responsibilities are, they'll appreciate those skills later. We want to be able to promote that at a young age, so it becomes common for them.”
Police officers will provide helmet fittings and information about bicycle laws in the state. Children younger than 12 are required to wear a helmet while bicycling in Pennsylvania, Ahlgren said.
The rodeo is sponsored by the Cranberry Township police, Cranberry Township EMS, Cranberry Elks and AAA East Central.
Participants are required to bring their own bikes and wear a helmet. New this year, they will welcome people with electric and non-electric scooters and hoverboards, Ahlgren said, as those other types of transportation are becoming more popular.
They will also give free bike inspections, thoroughly going over the parts of the children's bikes, making small repairs or recommendations.
After that, there is an obstacle course children can ride their bikes through to practice their balance, steering and other skills. Those skills and lessons learned will hopefully translate when they begin driving vehicles as they get older, Ahlgren said.
