Butler residents will soon be able to hitch a ride on public transit to Cranberry Township.

The county commissioners at their Wednesday meeting approved the TransLoc pilot program, which would see commuters on the Butler Transit Authority's buses to Pittsburgh receive rides to Cranberry from the Route 528 park 'n ride in Jackson Township.

That means someone living in Butler could get on the bus at the former Shop 'n Save in Pullman Plaza, ride west on Route 68 and south on Route 528 to the park 'n ride near the Interstate 79 intersection, disembark the bus there, and ride in a six-passenger van to their job in Cranberry Township.

A transit authority bus stop at EDCO Park in Evans City would allow residents of that borough to use TransLoc to access Cranberry as well.

Mark Gordon, the county's director of planning and economic development, told the commissioners that the Butler-based Alliance for Nonprofit Resources would provide the vans or any other vehicles the program might need to transport riders from the park 'n ride to Cranberry Township.

Anyone can use the service, including those who want to shop or go to a doctor's appointment in Cranberry Township.
