Child sexual assaulter gets paroled
A Butler man who pleaded guilty in April to indecent assault in connection with the sexual assault of a child will be paroled Thursday, after being sentenced Wednesday.
Paul A. Claypoole, 41, was sentenced to 11½ to 23½ months in Butler County Prison, given credit for 506 days time served and ordered to register as a sex offender for 15 years.
President Judge Thomas Doerr, who handed down Claypoole's sentence, ordered that he be paroled Thursday, to give the county's probation office time to review a parole plan filed Wednesday by Claypoole's lawyer, Joseph Nash.
Nash on Wednesday told Doerr that Claypoole, who police say was caught April 3, 2017, assaulting a 15-year-old child in a home on Center Avenue, has “done a significant amount of time and we're ready to resolve this matter.”
He said Claypoole had participated in numerous programs, including an anger management course, during his incarceration at Butler County Prison.
Claypoole was charged after a witness walking by the home saw the assault through a window and called police. City police initially charged him with two counts of felony indecent assault, three counts of misdemeanor indecent assault and another felony sex-related charge.
In April, Claypoole pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor indecent assault as part of a deal with prosecutors. The rest of the charges were withdrawn.
Claypoole briefly spoke before Doerr Wednesday morning, saying, “I'm sorry if you think I did something. God bless yins. That's it.”
According to court documents, Claypoole pleaded guilty in 1998 to statutory sexual assault and was sentenced to 4 to 8 months in that case.
