Grant would fund holiday DUI checkpoints
One grant application approved by county commissioners Wednesday would pay for municipal police officers to participate in DUI checkpoints and roving patrols during holidays.
Two grant applications and a resolution involving a grant, requested by District Attorney Rich Goldinger, were approved by the county commissioners at a special meeting Wednesday morning.
The Rights and Services Act grant is a two-year, $355,163 grant that would fund the salaries and benefits of the three existing employees in the victim witness unit, Goldinger said. The amount may allow him to hire another employee as well, he said.
The commissioners also approved a measure to allow Goldinger to apply for a $74,770, two-year Victims of Juvenile Offenders grant.
The grant provides financial support, training, and technical assistance to county-based victim service agencies to promote the rights and services to victims involved with the juvenile justice system, according to the state Commission on Crime and Delinquency website.
The commissioners also approved a resolution authorizing Leslie Osche, the commissioners' chairman, to sign a DUI Task Force Grant. The state Department of Transportation requires the resolution in the grant application process.
Goldinger explained that the $50,000 would pay for municipal police officers to participate in DUI checkpoints and roving patrols during holidays that traditionally see an increased number of drunken drivers on the county's roads.
