Barbara Anne Cook

Barbara Cook

The family of Barbara Anne Cook of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., must regretfully announce her passing Friday after a short, painful, yet courageous battle against pancreatic cancer.

Barbara was born Dec. 24, 1956, and was the daughter of Steve Butcherine and the late Anna F. Butcherine of Grove City. She had resided in Boyers, where she also was predeceased by her sister, Shirley.

Barbara was a homemaker who loved crafts and was an avid crafter who learned her skills by many hours of practice and help from her cherished sister-in-law, Beth, whom she always counted on for yearly crafting excursions and from all her early times traveling across our great countryside moving from place to place as a military wife.

Barb was a Navy wife in every sense of the word, never complaining and always ready to pack our bags when the orders came, even the year we moved five times.

Barb always had time for and always made time for family and friends no matter what was happening in her own life, but most of all, she was a giver. She would open up her heart and home to anyone in need. From a home-cooked meal for one of her husband’s shipmates, a place to watch a ballgame in a homey atmosphere or a backyard barbecue, she always tried to make the younger sailors less homesick in a motherly way.

Everyone else knew they could come to her with their problems and have a place to stay and get their lives back together. She gave what she could in money, food, clothes or just a talk.

Barb gave herself and took very little in return. In the end, she asked for the family to come together, for God to watch over us and accept her into his arms. Barb was and is loved and will be dearly missed.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, David N. Cook, USN RET, whom she married June 20, 1974; her son, Eric and his wife, Lori, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; her daughter, Kelly Vann and her husband, Mark, of Gaston, N.C.; her brothers, Steve Butcherine Jr. of Karns City, Richard Butcherine and his wife, Melinda, of Virginia Beach, Va., Tom Butcherine and his wife, Linda of Hilliards, Don Butcherine and his wife, Beth, of Hilliards, and Larry Butcherine and his wife, Tracey, of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; six loving grandchildren, Brianna Vann, Sean Cook, Caleb Cook, Sara Vann, Trinity Cook and Piper Vann; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
