EVANS CITY - A sinkhole on Route 68 in the borough reduced traffic during the evening commute Wednesday.

Crews responded to the a report of the hole just before 5 p.m. on Route 68/West Main Street east of Edco Park.

On scene, crews from PennDOT worked to determine the cause of the hole. It appeared to be a few feet in diameter.

Traffic was backed up in both directions as officers with the Evans City/Seven Fields Regional Police Department directed alternating lines of traffic in the open eastbound lane.

Officials at the scene did not have a timetable for when the road would be fully open, nor did they say what caused the issue. A single lane of traffic was expected to be maintained until crews could address the hole.
