Charge dropped in stabbing case

A Buffalo Township woman accused of stabbing her fiancé several times last summer will have one less criminal charge to worry about.

On Wednesday, 37-year-old Dawn N. Tattershall's lawyer, public defender Kimberly Hudak, came to an agreement with the prosecution to drop an attempted murder in the first degree charge against Tattershall during a hearing before District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.

Tattershall now faces four charges, including attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest.

The alleged attack, according to charging documents, occurred June 16 at the home of the victim, Dale Orris, and left him with three stab wounds and in need of hospital treatment.

Hudak said the charge was dropped because there was no evidence of premeditation in the incident, which is a prerequisite for a first-degree attempted murder charge.

Police said 53-year-old Orris, who is from Freeport, was deceptive, hiding the knife that Tattershall used to stab him in a nearby shed. For that, he was charged with tampering with evidence, to which he pleaded guilty Oct. 9.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled substance and was sentenced to a combined 18 months of probation. He originally faced charges of tampering with physical evidence, disorderly conduct and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

At the time of the attack, police said Orris' bloody injuries were in the middle of his chest, back and upper left arm. He told police, court documents said, that Tattershall stabbed him.

But during a June interview with the Butler Eagle, Orris brushed off the damage, saying, “I was not hurt that bad.” He also denied being stabbed in the chest.
