Ice affects Monday morning commute

Icy roads this morning are making for white knuckle moments for some motorists.

A boy suffered a minor injury about 9 a.m. today when the school bus he was riding slid into a guardrail in Jefferson Township.

The bus was headed to St. Luke Lutheran School in Saxonburg when the accident happened at Bonniebrook Road and Route 356 near Penn United, state police said.

There were about 10 students on the bus. No other injuries were reported.

The boy had a “bump” on the head, a trooper said. An ambulance crew examined him. His mother later arrived and took him home.

The bus later was back on the road headed to the school. Police blamed icy road conditions for the accident.

State and local police reported a number of accidents, apparently all minor, on Butler County roads.

No injuries were reported but emergency crews had to rescue a driver trapped in his overturned vehicle on Route 356 in Jefferson Township. That crash happened about 8:30 a.m.

About 15 minutes earlier, an accident was reported on Route 422 in Butler Township.

There was at least one other crash this morning on Route 8 at Renfrew Road in Penn Township.

PennDOT has been notified about the slick roads, police said.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for northwest Pennsylvania, including Butler County, for today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

“Very light freezing rain may reach the ground over the next few hours this morning,” said the advisory at 8 a.m.
