Butler School District superintendent releases statement after student death Monday morning

In response to the death of a Summit Elementary student and the injury of two other Summit students in a vehicle accident Monday morning, Butler Area School District Superintendent Brian White sent the following letter to Butler School District parents.

Dear Butler Area School District Parents/Guardians:It is with great sadness that I share the tragic loss of one of our Summit Elementary students with you. In addition, other students were injured in the accident. When our school community experiences a tragedy, such as the loss of a young life, it impacts all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with the students and their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.Although we have not shared this sad news with our students yet, some are already aware that something tragic has occurred. We wanted them to have the chance to talk to you first. Please take some time tonight to talk to your child. We have arranged for extra counselors to be available at Summit Elementary School for any students and staff members who are in need of grief support. In addition, counselors are available at all of our other schools.Every child is different and will process this news in his or her own way. You know your child better than anybody else. If you see that your child is grieving, please seek help from our counselors or another trained professional in our community. The Highmark Caring Place offers resources for parents to help their students through the grieving process, including ways children process grief, signs of grief and ideas for connecting with a grieving child. https://www.highmarkcaringplace.com/…/grievingChildren.shtmlOn behalf of the entire school community, we extend our deepest sympathy to the student's family and friends at this difficult time.Sincerely,Brian J.
