Governor declares state of emergency in preparation for weekend snowstorm
Gov. Tom Wolf has declared a state of emergency for Pennsylvania in preparation for the severe winter storm that is expected to dump close to a foot of snow in Butler County this weekend.
The declaration allows for additional assistance for storm-related needs, including a call-up of the Pennsylvania National Guard and the ability for other states to offer assistance, according to the governor's press release.
Residents are asked to postpone travel during the storm, but those who insist on driving will have speed restricted to 45 mph on interstates and expressways.
Along with reduced speed, there is a commercial vehicle ban in place between noon Saturday and noon Sunday on all interstates and the Turnpike.
“We want to be aggressive in managing this storm, during which snowfall rates could exceed one to two inches per hour,” Wolf said in the release. “Our top concern is the safety of residents. If you do not have to travel during the storm, please avoid it. Please heed warnings from emergency responders and personnel, and remember to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly.”
Those travelling are told to check 511PA for updates on road conditions throughout the storm.
Residents can visit 511PA at www.511PA.com as well as download the 511PA app on their phone or call 5-1-1.
